About

The Riley’s legacy.

Over the last 140 years and across 5 generations, our family-run business has brought the Isle of Man everything they need to make their houses feel more like home.

From supplying agricultural machinery and bringing the first combine harvester over to the island to becoming a fully-fledged, “one-stop-shop” for all things garden and home, we’re proud of what we’ve achieved throughout our impressive legacy. Of course, this wouldn’t be possible without our Riley’s team and our loyal customers who trust us to give them (and their homes) everything they need.

Our History

Our roots in gardening and hardware run just as deep as our ones in the Isle of Man.

John Thomas Faragher (JT) originally started his agricultural merchant store whilst also running the cattle markets, and being a local travel agent.

From our first premises (where Lord Street is now), JT enjoyed some early success and soon became the Mayor of Douglas and the first Manxman to receive the freedom of the Borough.

The brand evolved when JT's daughter married Jack Riley, who joined the business and diversified into auctioneering.

JR Riley (our current owners’ father and grandfather) fought in the war and when he returned, he too joined the business and followed family tradition.

Image

JR’s son, Martyn, returned to the island after completing his studies at agricultural college in Nottingham and took over the business.

Martyn’s dreams of creating a one-stop garden shop were realised when Riley's Garden Centre was opened in 2005.

Martyn’s son, Thomas, is now our Managing Director, ensuring that our family legacy lives on.

To our staff and customers who have allowed our business to grow, we thank you. We look forward to the next chapter in the Riley’s story.

This is an enjoyable place to visit when you’re looking for gardening supplies, plants, seeds, or would simply like to grab a coffee or a bite with a friend in their cafe. There is also a children’s playground area too.

They also sell a wide variety of gifts, with conservatory furniture in the summer and Christmas merch in the winter.
